Following the novena mass of St Ana, Dr Paul Varela Gomes (Architectural Historian and the Director of Fundacao Oriente Goa and Portugal) released the book ‘A Living Architectural Splendour’, a study on the architectural history of the church of St Ana, Talaulim Santana authored by Rosario F Rodrigues. A Sunday crowd packed the church and the Parish Priest Father Lourdinho R Pereira welcomed the crowd with warm words. Dr Gomes briefly explained about the architecture of St Ana church. “You all are sitting in one of the best parish churches in the world mainly because of its architectural style. It’s niche walls; galleries and clerestory are exceptional and makes it a rarity among the churches of the world. It is designed by Father Francisco do Rego, a Goan architect and constructed by Goans too”. Speaking on the book Father Lourdinho said, “This book will force the reader to go to the site, it breaks down the inscrutability that surrounds the churches architecture and enables one to view the church from a totally different angle and not just look, but understand”. He also explained about the highly appreciated comments on the book by Mr N Taher (Deputy Superintendent of the ASI), Father Délio Mendonça (Director of Xavier Centre of Historical Research), Professor Prajal Sakhardande (Lecturer at the Department of History, Dhempe College), Architect Dean D’Cruz, Architect Poonam Verma Mascarenhas (Conservation Architect), Father Lourdinho R Pereira (Parish Priest), Mr Percival Noronha (Founder and Secretary, Indian Heritage Society), Mr Rozario Estibeiro (Accredited Photojournalist), Architect Ketak S P Nachinolkar (Conservation Architect), Architect Tulio de Sousa (Architect) and Father J Loiola Pereira (Archbishop’s Secretary).
The author alone performed the entire work behind the book -photography, editing, cover design, page layout, graphics, printing and publishing, etc. His earlier books include ‘The Happenings of Batim, ‘World’s Grand Procession of Saints in India, ‘Models of Holiness From India And Missionaries On The Way To Sainthood and ‘Holy Face And The Procession Of Saints’.
The book contains over 450 descriptive colour photographs of the entire church as it stands today. The book also provide vivid details; the history of the parish, a deep study of the celebration of the feast of its patron St Anna and of her relic, a brief theology of Catholic beliefs, a glossary of terms and the history of the churches architecture.
This book is a photographic document of the present state of the aesthetic masterpiece said the author. The book is available only with the Santana church committee. The church is currently undergoing massive restoration and conservation executed by the INTACH, New Delhi.
